Looks like troubles won’t end for Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt & Diljit Dosanjh’s film. After CBFC levied 40 cuts on the film, Anurag Kashyap, who is one of the co-producers of the film requested the tribunal and I&B minister to intervene.
According to a report by BollywoodLife, the tribunal viewing the film is now demanding the makers to drop Punjab from Udta Punjab.
A source close to the production house stated that:
“A screening for the tribunal was held last Friday. They watched the film and once done, told everyone that they will send their recommendations through a letter on Monday. But they verbally informed the director that they want the word Punjab dropped from the title. Not only that they also want the makers to remove any reference of the state in the film or cities thereof.”
Udta Punjab is heading closer to its release date and we recall how a similar controversy happened with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon ki Rasleela-Ram Leela. The title had to be changed just 48 hours ahead of the film’s scheduled release.
Later a TOI report stated that “The court’s order came on a suit filed by six petitioners, including Prabhu Samaj Dharmik Ram Leela Committee, saying the movie hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus as it contains sex, violence and vulgarity.” The critics were concerned that since the film was not even closely related to the divine figure, the name would mislead the audience members.
While we are still waiting for the official confirmation on these reports, we do hope the film releases without any controversy now!
