At least five people have died after a packed boat carrying more than 500 migrants destined for Europe capsized suddenly off the coast of Libya yesterday.
The wooden vessel listed sharply to port, scattering dozens of migrants into the Mediterranean, before swiftly capsizing and leaving hundreds fighting for their lives in the sea.
Two nearby Italian navy ships launched a helicopter and dropped rafts and life vests into the sea.
Those picked from the water were among 5,600 migrants heading for Italy who have been rescued or intercepted at sea this week.
