Northern California hit by magnitude 7 earthquake

A massive magnitude 7 earthquake struck the Northern California coast on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning for a large area of coastline in California and Oregon.
The earthquake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), was centered about 39 miles (63 km) west of the town of Ferndale, a sparsely populated area along the northern California coast, according to the US Geological Survey.
The National Tsunami Center issued a warning for a significant portion of the US West Coast, stretching from Dunes City, Oregon, to San Francisco and San Jose, California, which is 400 miles (643 km) away. San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area were included in the tsunami warning.
