ISLAMABAD: Aspirants to the constituencies vacated by Maryam Nawaz after her disqualification by a corruption court were allowed on Tuesday to contest election on their desired symbol by the electoral commission.
Maryam, the presumed political heir of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, was found guilty of forging documents linked to her family’s purchase of luxury flats in London.
She was sentenced to eight years in prison by an anti-corruption court and declared inelgibile to contest the July 25 general election. Maryam and her father will face arrest on arrival in Pakistan.
Maryam’s slot will be filled by two PML-N loyalists, Ali Pervaiz and Irfan Khokhar, who will contest the elections from NA-127 and PP-173 constituencies after papers for their candidacy on the traditional lion symbol were accepted by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The electoral commission also allotted the lion symbol to Rana Sharif, who replaced Rana Zahid in NA-146 constituency of Pakpatan after the latter’s disqualificaiton.
