The arrest of Zainab’s suspected murderer was announced in a press conference by Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday – 14 days after her body was found in a garbage dump in Kasur.
Following the press conference Punjab’s CM has come under fire for asking to applaud the joint investigation team over having apprehended the suspect. Attendees applauded in the presence of Zainab’s father who sat right next to the CM.
The act has received widespread criticism.
In the national assembly, opposition leader Khursheed Shah burst out over the lack of sensitivity shown by the CM during the press conference, demanding that he apologise.
Speaking in the assembly, Shah asked whether clapping during the press conference was justified when 1100 children had been abused to date in such incidents in Punjab. He further claimed that no investigation had been launched in cases reported during 2016 and 2017.
Earlier on Tuesday, addressing a press conference attended by Zainab’s father and Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, CM Sharif claimed that the murderer had been arrested after DNA testing. He thanked the law enforcement department and other officials who helped solve the case while asking the attendees to applaud for the team.
Social media went a buzz and Twitteratis started questioning the logic behind the applause at a gathering which called for a sombre mood.
But the argument extended further when the members giving presentation during the press conference shared a laugh in the presence of Zainab’s father, something that was also debated on social media.
Concerns were also raised over Shehbaz Sharif switching off the microphone placed in front of Zainab’s father during the press conference.
But that is not all.
Questions relating to what Rana Sanaullah instructed Zainab’s father prior to the press conference, all of which was also recorded by the media present at the time, have been raised.
