PPP considering joining federal govt, expected to get key ministries

President Asif Ali Zardari summons NA session on May 13

In Islamabad, the PPP is considering joining the coalition government at the national level. This comes after the party secured key positions such as the president, Senate chairman, and governors in Punjab and Balochistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended an offer to the PPP to join his cabinet, even though they had previously declined to be part of the government. The PPP had supported Sharif’s election in the National Assembly.

It is anticipated that the PPP will receive important ministries in the federal cabinet if they decide to join. Internal discussions have already begun within the party, but the final decision will be made by the central executive committee (CEC) or general council members.

Previously, the CEC had decided against joining the government despite efforts from the PML-N. The PPP leaders had expressed their reluctance to join, preferring instead to hold key positions like president and Senate chairman, as well as governorships in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

Rubina Khalid, a senior leader from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is expected to lead the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) under the PPP’s plan to secure important roles in the federal government.

During the election campaign, PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had targeted PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, who was seeking a fourth term as prime minister.
