Netanyahu cancels Israeli delegation to US due to UN Gaza vote

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he would not be sending a planned delegation to Washington after the United States chose not to veto a U.N. Security Council proposal calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Netanyahu expressed disappointment in Washington’s decision, stating that it represented a significant shift from their previous stance and could hinder efforts to combat Hamas and secure the release of over 130 hostages in Gaza.

Due to this change in the American position, Netanyahu’s office confirmed that the delegation would not be traveling to Washington as originally planned. The U.N. Security Council voted to demand an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as well as the unconditional release of all hostages.

The United States abstained from the vote, prompting questions about a potential shift in American policy. The White House denied any change in policy, emphasizing ongoing discussions with Israel. The delegation was set to discuss a planned Israeli military operation in Rafah, where many Palestinians are seeking refuge.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby expressed disappointment in Israel’s decision to cancel the meeting, highlighting concerns about a potential ground offensive in Rafah. Kirby stressed the importance of exploring alternative solutions and reiterated the U.S. position that a major ground offensive in Rafah would be a significant mistake.
